AUB’s
Mission Statement,
last
revised and approved by the Board of Trustees in March, 2000, and as
printed in the Catalogue 2001-2001:
AUB is a teaching-centered
research university, convinced that excellence in teaching and research
go hand-in-hand. Its
mission is to enhance education, primarily the education of the peoples
of the Middle East, to serve society through its educational functions,
and to participate in the advancement of knowledge. AUB bases its
educational perspective and methods and its academic organization on the
American model of higher education.
The university emphasizes
scholarship that enables students to think for themselves, stresses
academic excellence, and promotes high principles of character.
It aims to produce men and women who are not only technically
competent in their professional fields but also life-long learners who
have breadth of vision, a sense of civic and moral responsibility, and
devotion to the fundamental values of human life. The university believes in and encourages freedom of thought
and expression. It expects, however, that this freedom will be enjoyed
in a spirit of integrity and with a full sense of responsibility.
AUB began
the process of applying for accreditation by preparing a Pre-application
Review document and submitting it with a Letter of Intent to the Middle
States’ Commission on Higher Education in October of 2000. The document,
a compilation of information about AUB in four volumes, substantiates
how AUB fulfills the eligibility requirements established by the
Commission. Copies are on file in Jafet Library. For the Table of Contents see: PARDoc.Table of Contents
AUB’s
application for candidacy was completed over a period of several months
with the submission, at the end of February 2001, of a two-volume Self-Assessment
Document. Copies are on file at Jafet Library. For the Table of
Contents see
SADoc.Table
of Contents
Every
six months during the candidacy stage, the university is required to
make an Interim Report to the Commission on progress toward its goals.
AUB’s first Interim Report was filed by Provost Peter Heath, who also
serves as the chairperson of the Self-Study Steering Committee, on
February 15, 2002.
AUB's Design
for its Self-Study was submitted to the Middle States Office in May, 2002 and
approved in June, 2002, giving the 14 Self-Study Task Teams a green
light to move ahead with their research.
This
Document and its two companion documents (below) were prepared by the
Board of Deans, under the leadership of the Provost and President,
and sent by the Provost to all faculty members in March, 2000. The
document was updated in April, 2002.
