Cross-Cultural Management and Diversity

"Cross-cultural Management and the Importance of Diversity." Lecture by Carlos Ghosn, Nissan and Renault CEO, who told EMBA students to embrace diversity since it is exactly what will spur them to be creative and succeed. Ghosn, himself, is the product of diversity, having been born to Lebanese parents in Brazil and grown up between Lebanon and France, where he is also a citizen. Later, because of a series of outstanding jobs, he also lived and worked in the United States, Japan, France and Brazil. His diverse background has helped him a lot in business, he said, noting: "When you are an outsider and you cannot be categorized into one culture, it makes people feel that you are unlikely to be biased."

Entrepreneurship & Brand Building

"Competitive Strategy: Entrepreneurship & Brand Building - The Story of Aramex". Lecture by Fady Ghandour, CEO and founder of Aramex, to the EMBA community. Aramex's strategy was anchored in learning through global alliances; attracting, empowering and sharing ownership with the most talented people in the region; launching a long list of innovative services (e.g. Shop and Ship); and being quick to recognize, and capitalize on new market opportunities. Aramex's success is built on a remarkable corporate culture which embraces experimentation; front line heroes; and a flat, technology-enabled company.

Saving A Cedar Forest

The Tannourine cedar forest is the largest forest in Lebanon. It has been declared a nature reserve in 1999. In recent years, a serious new insect pest, Cephalcia tannourinensis, appeared causing severe damage to trees. AUB scientists, Nasri S. Kawar and Nabil Nemer, have been involved in studying the life cycle of the pest and developing means of minimizing its damage.
Financial support has been received from GEF-UNEP, FAO, Lebanese Ministries of Agriculture and environment. The DVD shows the accomplishments in managing this insect pest and related activities that have been supported throught a $1.2 million project entitled "Integrated Management of Cedar Forests in Lebanon in Collaboration with other Mediterranean Countries"
funded by GEF-UNEP to the Ministry of Environment and implemented by AUB from 2004-2007.
