 | [L-R] Hallab, Dorman and Zaatari
| The first Abdul-Hamid Hallab Regional External Programs (REP) Service Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Ghazi Zaatari, associate dean of faculty affairs, professor, and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. The ceremony was held in the President's Office on October 29. In addition to President Peter Dorman and Dr. Zaatari, Trustee Nabil Chartouni, Vice-President for REP Hassan Diab, Abdul-Hamid Hallab, Director of Information and Public Relations Hikmat Beaini, and Dr. Ghazi Zaatari's family were in attendance.

"REP is proud to institutionalize an annual REP service excellence award and delighted that the first award went to Dr. Zaatari, who more than deserves this recognition for his accomplishments as an outstanding REP consultant," Diab said.
The award was established a few months ago following an endowment by Nabil Chartouni honoring Abul-Hamid Hallab, one of the founders of REP, and recognizing the achievements of exceptional REP consultants from AUB. To be eligible for this award, faculty and staff members need to gather major contributions to the REP mission of providing world-class services while reflecting AUB core values and its commitment to service excellence. |
The REP Inter-faculty Advisory Committee comprised of Dorman, Hallab, Diab and deans of other faculties, nominated Zaatari for his "exceptional commitment to the projects he was involved in and who has made major contributions to the AUB mission of serving 'the peoples of the Middle East and beyond,'" Diab said.
"I am deeply thankful for the confidence of the selection committee, President Dorman, Vice President for REP Hassan Diab, and his predecessor Dr. George Najjar, and I am also thankful for the staff of the REP office for their encouragement and support throughout my involvement with the REP projects," Zaatari said. |
Zaatari received an engraved commemorative plaque and a $1,000 prize, which he will donate to the medical students' scholarship at AUB.
After receiving his MD from AUB in 1976, Zaatari left for the United States, where he did his residency in pathology and laboratory medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and a fellowship in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is the author of numerous publications, book chapters, and a book of pathology. He is a member of the Education Committee of the International Academy of Pathology, secretary of the Arab Division of IAP and was pivotal in the establishment of the Arab School of Pathology. He is also director of the Environment Core Laboratory at AUB and chair of WHO's Tobacco Regulation Study Group and a member of the Tobacco Laboratory Network. |
