Preparing for the two-hour bike tour

On Sunday October 25, the Student Representative Committee (SRC) of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) in collaboration with the "Zawtar-FHS Community Partnership" project, the AUB "Center for Civic Engagement and Community Services," and the municipality of Zawtar el-Charkieh organized a biking activity in the village of Zawtar el-Charkieh in South Lebanon. Thirty bikers from AUB and the village participated in the activity. The two-hour bike tour was interrupted by stops where the mayor, Mr. Riad Ismail and the local youngsters provided the AUB students with historic information about the village. The activity was followed by a lunch by the Litani River, courtesy of the municipality and Mayor Ismail. The gathering was attended by Dr. Iman Nuwayhid, Dean of FHS, and Dr. Kamel Mohanna, President of the Amel Association. The bikes were kindly loaned by FHS alumnus, Mr. Jawad Sbeity (owner of Beirut by Bike).

This is the latest in a series of joint activities between the FHS and the town of Zawtar el-Charkieh as part of a partnership that started in February 2007. The main goals of this latest activity were to introduce AUB students in general and FHS students in particular to the community of Zawtar and to the concept of the "community partnership;" to engage students in community based activities by way of enhancing their sense of civic engagement and responsibility; and to find common ground and shared interests among the youth in both groups upon which future activities may be planned.
