Gallery Director/Curator

The American University of Beirut is embarking on a major initiative in the visual arts. We will shortly be opening two new exhibition galleries. The first will house a small permanent collection of paintings, primarily by Lebanese artists from the early 20th century. The second will showcase temporary, rotating exhibitions, concentrating primarily on contemporary art. We are seeking a dynamic Director/Curator to take responsibility for these galleries. Familiarity with the local Lebanese art milieu and regional artistic developments is strongly recommended.

The position carries an academic appointment in the Department of Fine Arts and Art History, and a close working relationship with the department is envisaged. The successful candidate will integrate the art exhibition spaces as much as possible with the teaching curriculum. Ideally, courses in curatorship will be taught as well.

Candidates should possess at minimum an MFA in studio arts, or an MA in art history, curatorial or museum studies. Curatorial experience is expected.

Job Description


The Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut seeks an established scholar of prominent standing in his/her field of specialization for visiting appointment to the Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology.

In History, the applicant will be a recognized senior academic specializing either in classical Islamic history or in the modern history of the Middle East in such areas, for example, as legal history and jurisprudence or in socio-economic, intellectual and cultural studies. In Archaeology, the applicant will be an acknowledged senior academic specializing in areas not currently covered by the department, including Egyptology, the archaeology of Mesopotamia and/ or Iran, the archaeology of pre-Islamic Arabia and the Gulf, Islamic, environmental or marine archaeology. Applicants who have experience in teaching archaeological methodology and theory are particularly welcome.

In addition to the normal functions associated with the occupancy of a Chair at AUB, candidates are expected to teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester, supervise student research and MA or, in the case of History, PhD theses. The language of instruction is English. The period of visiting appointment is one to two years. The appointment is to begin on September 15, 2012.

The Whittlesey Visiting Professorship

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut is inviting applications for appointment as Whittlesey visiting professor in the field of archaeology specializing, in particular, in either Egyptology, Marine or Environmental Archaeology, or the archaeology of pre-Islamic and Islamic Arabia to begin September 15, 2012. Applicants can be individuals already established in their area of concentration or ones who are at the outset of their academic careers. Applicants who have, besides their field of specialization, experience in teaching archaeological theory and methodology are encouraged to apply.

The Center for American Studies and Research

The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages

The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages seeks applicants in the fields of Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory (with special emphasis on prose genres); and Qur’anic Studies preferably with an ability to teach Islamic Mysticism (taṣawwuf) - preference will be given to candidates who can teach advanced courses in both fields.

The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is modern Standard Arabic, but mastery of English is an essential requirement. A good knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in grammar and modern Arabic thought to native speakers of Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage, and training in Western methodologies are essential.

For the position in modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory, applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, including Western literary theory. For the position in Qur’anic Studies, knowledge of Persian language and literature would also be an asset.

Applicants must have a PhD upon appointment. Rank will normally be at the Assistant Professor level; usual contracts are initially for four years, starting September 15, 2012. The department offers BA and MA degrees, and a PhD in Arabic Language and Literature.

The Department of Biology

The Biology Department at the American University of Beirut is seeking to fill three assistant professorships in the areas of 1) plant biology with special interest in plant ecology or plant cell and molecular biology; 2) population genetics with special interest in evolution or bioinformatics; 3) microbiology with special interest in environmental microbiology or molecular microbiology. Appointments are to begin September 15, 2012. Appointments at higher rank will be considered.

The Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the American University of Beirut solicits applications to fill a non-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of analytical chemistry. Higher ranks could also be considered depending on qualifications. Applications are encouraged in all areas of analytical chemistry, particularly in modern analytical instrumental analysis. The applicant is expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to establish an externally funded and internationally competitive research program, to supervise graduate and undergraduate research students and to actively participate in departmental activities and governance.

The Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a faculty position in Computer Science to begin September 15, 2012. Strong candidates from all areas of computer science are encouraged to apply and will be considered. Areas of particular interest include High-performance Computing, Mobile Computing, and Systems.

AUB is a teaching-centered research university, and the successful candidate is expected to build a vigorous research program and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses. The department of computer science has research strengths in graphics, networking, high-performance computing, and software engineering. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

The Department of Education at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a faculty position in Science Education or a related field to begin September 15, 2012.

Successful candidates are expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in science education or/and related areas contingent upon qualifications; supervise internships and practica, advise graduate and undergraduate students; conduct and publish independent research; direct graduate students’ research; develop proposals for extramural funding; participate in outreach educational activities, and take an active role in collaborations with schools and academic life in the department, college, and university.

Applicants must have earned a doctorate in science education or in a closely- related field at the time of appointment. Teaching experience at the school and/or college and experience in supervising of student teaching programs are assets.

The Department of Geology

The Department of Geology at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon, invites applications for faculty positions in the following areas:

Hydrogeology
Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses in hydrogeology and oceanography, as well as undergraduate geology courses in field methods and general geology. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in Hydrogeology, and to supervise graduate students. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Hydrogeology, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals. Preference will be given to candidates having experience in groundwater flow modelling, in karst hydrogeology, and are familiar with the Geology of Lebanon and/or the Middle East region.

Carbonate Sedimentology
Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in sedimentology and stratigraphy, along with other general geology courses. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in carbonate sedimentology, and to supervise graduate students. As about 90% of the Lebanese crustal segment is made up of limestone, research focusing on limestone diagenesis & depositional environment is essential. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in this field, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals.

Seismology
Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses in Geophysics and undergraduate general geology courses. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in Seismology, and to supervise graduate students. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Seismology with applications to hydrocarbon exploration and/or earthquakes, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals.

Rank will normally be at the Assistant Professor level; usual contracts are initially for four years, starting September 15, 2012. The department offers both bachelor and master's degrees.

The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration

Faculty position in International Studies/Middle East
The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration (PSPA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time, open rank position in international studies with an interest in topics relevant to the politics of Middle East and/or North Africa to begin September 15, 2012.

We will consider applicants of any subfield in political science or a related field. We are particularly interested in seeking a scholar who can complement the department’s existing area of expertise. Qualified candidates must possess a PhD in public administration, public management, or a closely related field at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in public administration and management. Ability to teach courses on topics such as non-profit management, program implementation, program evaluation, and qualitative methods is desirable. While the specific area of research specialization is open, preference will be given to candidates focused on topics relevant to issues of public administration and public management within the Middle East region. As AUB is a culturally diverse institution, candidates must also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be prepared to contribute to the mentoring of MA thesis projects.

The Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a full time faculty position in clinical psychology or social psychology. As such, we invite applicants in either of these two areas of specialization. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of specialization.

Preference will be given to candidates with teaching interests in multivariate statistics and research design. We seek candidates who are committed to excellence in research, teaching, and institutional service. The position is to begin September 15, 2012 and requires a PhD by the time of appointment. Appointments are for an initial period of four years. The usual teaching load is not more than nine hours a week. The language of instruction is English.
