Farid El Khazen
Short Biography
Professor Farid el Khazen received his PhD in International
Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)
in Washington, D.C. He joined the Department of Political Studies and Public
Administration at AUB in 1987 and from 2000 to 2005 he was the Chair of the
Department. He was also editor of the academic journal Al Abhath,
published by the faculty of Arts and Sciences at AUB and has served on the
editorial board of several journals. Prof. el Khazen is the author of numerous
books and articles, including The Breakdown of the State in Lebanon,
1967-1976 (Harvard University Press and I.B. Tauris, 2000); Parliamentary Elections in
Lebanon (1992-2000): Democracy with No Choice (Beirut: Dar al-Nahar, 2001);
The Communal Pact of National Identities, The Making of
Politics of the 1943 National Pact in Lebanon (Oxford: Center for Lebanese
Studies, 1993); Political Parties in Lebanon, The limits of
Democratic Experience ( Beirut: Lebanese Center for Policy Study, 2002). He
is also a frequent contributor to Lebanese and Arab dailies. He received several
awards, notably for his book on the causes of the war in Lebanon.
His current research interests include authoritarianism in the
Arab world, political parties, electoral politics, and postwar Lebanon. In June
2005, Professor el Khazen was elected to Lebanese Parliament representing the
district of Kesrouan-Jbeil in Mount Lebanon. He continues to teach politics at
AUB.
