Committee shall act in an advisory and consultative capacity to the dean on:
-All matters submitted to it by the dean or any of its
members. -Appointment, promotion, reappointment or non-reappointment, leaves
of absence of three months or more, of faculty members. -Appointment of
chairpersons of departments and directors.
-The Advisory Committee shall act on matters of
unprofessional contact and make recommendations to
the dean.

The Admissions

Functions: -The Admissions Committee shall recommend
admission requirements for approval by the faculty, as well as any changes in
these requirements. -It shall select and recommend from among qualified
applicants those who should be admitted as undergraduate students to the
faculty. -It shall evaluate admission policies and recommend any changes
therein to the faculty.

The Student Affairs

Functions: -It shall deal with any aspect of
student life referred to it by the dean. -It shall work with faculty and
students to enrich the faculty's cultural activities. -It shall consider
and recommend action to the dean on all disciplinary matters involving students
in the faculty.

Functions: -The Graduate Studies
Committee shall act on admission to graduate work of all applicants who have
been recommended to it by individual departments. The Graduate Studies
Committee shall recommend all applicants for PhD work to the University Board
of Graduate Studies. -It shall act upon the recommendations of departments
concerning the advisor, the examining committee, and thesis topic of students
working towards a master's degree; in the case of PhD students, the committee
shall transmit its recommendations on these items to the Board of Graduate
Studies. -It shall rule on all departmental recommendations for exceptions
to existing regulations concerning graduate work at the master's level.
-Upon
the recommendation of the department concerned the Graduate Studies Committee
shall act on cases of graduate students whose work is unsatisfactory.
-It shall
periodically evaluate the graduate program as a whole and recommend changes to
the faculty and subsequently to the Board of Graduate Studies.

The Library

Functions:
-The Library Committee shall advise the
University librarian on matters of library policy
affecting the work of the faculty. -It shall advise both the
dean and the University librarian on the effects of program or curriculum
changes, both short-term and long-term, on library acquisition, with special
regard to budgetary implications, and shall in particular ensure adequate
library support for new or revised programs. -It shall advise and assist
the University librarian in building up a balanced collection.
-It shall assist
the University librarian in her/his efforts to carry out the library policies
of the University and the faculty. -It shall perform other related tasks at
the request of the dean.

The Research Committee

Functions: -It shall stimulate, encourage and
promote research in the faculty. -It shall review all applications for
University funded research grants for further recommendation to the dean and
other appropriate University bodies. -It shall promote communication
between researchers within the faculty and within the University. -It shall
keep the faculty informed of all available sources of research support whether
from the University or from granting agencies.

The Curriculum

Functions: -General academic development of the faculty. -The
Curriculum Committee shall, from time to time, re-evaluate the curriculum as a
whole and recommend changes through the Academic Committee to the faculty.
-Upon the recommendation of the department concerned, the Committee shall
approve new courses, discontinue existing courses, and modify courses as to
their length, content and number of credits assigned. -The Curriculum
Committee shall recommend to the faculty modifications to graduation
requirements. -The Curriculum Committee shall act in an advisory capacity
to the dean on matters concerning courses and examinations.

Functions: -The Administrative Committee shall rule on all cases of
undergraduate students whose academic status is irregular. It shall also rule
on requests and petitions from undergraduate students concerning academic
matters. -It shall have the power in extraordinary circumstances to make
exceptions to academic regulations in individual cases. A summary of all such
exceptional decisions shall be communicated to the faculty at least once in
each academic year.

The University Admissions
Committee FAS Representative: N. Nassif (Mathematics)
Functions: - To recommend to the senate the general principles,
policies and procedures of the admission of students to the University at the
undergraduate level and to establish criteria regarding admission of hardship
cases. Any proposed new policy or regulation or any proposed changes in
existing policies and regulations relating to University admissions shall be
referred by the proper authorities to the committee for its consideration and
recommendations. Final recommendations of the committee shall be submitted to
the senate for approval. - To look into general problems of University
admissions and to initiate, coordinate, and evaluate studies relating to
University and faculty admissions. -To interpret and coordinate the
admission regulations of the University in cases referred to it by the
proper authorities.

The Board of Graduate

Functions: - Shall
establish procedures and criteria for the evaluation of the graduate programs
by the faculties concerned. - Shall examine and make recommendations to the
senate concerning the initiation of new graduate programs, modification of
graduate programs, or cancellation of graduate programs upon the recommendation
of the Faculty Graduate Committee and/or the Inter faculty Graduate Program
Committee, and approval of the faculty(ies) concerned. - Graduate
Committees of the faculties shall be requested by the BGS to submit annual
reports on their graduate programs. - Shall set criteria for admission to
graduate study for academic graduate regulations and for requirements for
graduation. - Shall, upon the recommendation of the faculty concerned, act
on the admission of PhD applicants for graduate study. - Shall act on
faculty recommendations on candidacy for PhD degrees, thesis topics, and
examining committees. - Shall act on other matters referred to it by the
Faculty Graduate Committee.

Functions: - To enquire into
and act upon student violation of University rules and regulations brought to
its attention by the president, the provost, a dean or upon the initiation of
the committee. - To act on appeal requests brought to its attention by a
student, a committee, or a faculty member.

The Library

Functions: - To initiate, coordinate and
evaluate University plans for the development of all University libraries to
make recommendations to the senate regarding such matters. Any proposed new
policy or regulation related to library holdings, acquisitions and the use of
facilities or any proposed changes thereof shall be submitted by the University
librarian, through the office of the provost, to the committee for its
consideration and recommendations. Final recommendations of the committee shall
be submitted to the senate for approval.

Publications Committee FAS Representative: H. Sader (History and Archaeology) R. Sultan (Chemistry)
Functions: - To promote,
coordinate, and recommend policy for all academic publications bearing the
imprint of the American University of Beirut and intended for distribution
outside the University. - To ensure that such publications meet
internationally accepted standards of content, production, and design. - To
allocate funds for the publications which bear the University's imprint.

Functions: - To consider and recommend to the
senate policies to be followed in seeking grant support and guidelines for the
allocation of funds for research and faculty development. - To consider
policies to be followed in seeking grant support and the allocation of funds
for research. - To act in an advisory capacity to the provost in the
implementation of policies pertaining to request of grants for research and
faculty development. - To prepare, edit, and publish the Annual Research
Report of the University.

The Academic Development
Committee FAS Representatives: N. Nassif (Mathematics) J. Meloy (History and Archaeology)
Functions: - Shall examine and make
recommendations to the senate concerning the initiation of new undergraduate
programs upon the recommendation and approval of the faculty (or faculties)
concerned. - Shall establish procedures and criteria for evaluating
undergraduate (including interfaculty) programs at the University with the
assistance of curriculum committees of various faculties. - Shall establish
and evaluate criteria for faculty loads across the University. - The
committee will deal with any aspect of academic development referred to it by
the senate. - To follow up with the chairperson of the senate the
implementations of Senate decisions.
