The American University of Beirut (AUB), an independent, nonsectarian university, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the Middle East.     The Edward Said Chair of American Studies


    The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a visiting faculty position for the newly established Edward Said Chair of American Studies to begin September 15, 2009 or February 1, 2010.

    The Faculty is seeking a prominent scholar from any humanities or social science discipline, whose interests focus on American studies, broadly conceived. Scholars whose interests are interdisciplinary, or concern American interaction with the Middle East or the Arab World are particularly encouraged to apply.

    The Civilization Sequence Program


    The Civilization Sequence Program (CVSP) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for two positions to begin September 15, 2009.

    The field of expertise and geographical focus are open, but applicants must have a primary research focus between the 16th and 18th centuries. Candidates must combine disciplinary interests in two of the following fields: cultural studies, history, literature or philosophy.

    All positions are normally at the Assistant Professor level. Appointments are for an initial period of three years. Visiting appointments and/or appointments at higher ranks may also be considered. This position requires a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.

    The CVSP is a service program which offers a number of interdisciplinary undergraduate humanities courses. Course load is normally nine hours a week. The language of instruction is English. The successful candidate for this position will be offered the opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate courses in service of the CVSP mission close to his/her research fields, and will also be required to teach core courses from the ancient to contemporary periods on a regular basis. For the core courses faculty also participate by giving occasional common lectures to a large multi-sectioned audience.

    Visiting Professor of American Studies


    The Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at the American University of Beirut is seeking a scholar for a one-year position on a visiting academic appointment starting September 15, 2009. Professorial rank is open.

    We seek an Americanist from any social science or humanities discipline. We are particularly interested in a scholar whose teaching and research interests are interdisciplinary. Salary is competitive but depends upon qualifications.

    The Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology

    The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut seeks a recognized scholar of prominent standing in his/her field of specialization for visiting appointment as The Alfred H. Howell Endowed Chair in History and Archaeology.

    The applicant will be a recognized senior academic specializing either in classical Islamic history or in the modern history of the Middle East including such areas as legal history and jurisprudence or in socio-economic, intellectual and cultural studies

    In addition to the normal functions associated with the occupancy of a Chair at AUB, candidates are expected to teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester, supervise MA student work and assist in developing the recently re-introduced program of doctoral studies. The language of instruction is English. The period of visiting appointment is one to two years.

    Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages

    The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions in the fields of:

    - Modern Arabic Literature
    - Arabic as a Foreign Language

    The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages seeks applicants in the field of Modern Arabic Literature. The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is classical Arabic, but mastery of English in an essential requirement. Applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, as well as in modern literary theories. A good knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Islamic theology and philosophy and Arabic morphology and syntax to native speakers of Arabic.

    The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages seeks an experienced Coordinator for its Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) program. The successful candidate will coordinate both the regular academic year and intensive summer AFL language programs. Appointments may be made at the Assistant Professor level or the Lecturer level. A Ph.D. in Arabic in a relevant field in Arabic language and literature is required, as well as extensive experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language. Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Islamic theology and philosophy and Arabic morphology and syntax to native speakers of Arabic.

    The department offers BS and MS degrees in Biology, and has begun a doctoral program in Cell and Molecular Biology. Applicants are expected to have post-doctoral training.

    The Department of Computer Science at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions at all levels. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field with strong research and teaching records. Strong candidates from all areas of computer science will be considered, with priority given to candidates specializing in databases/data mining.

    The successful candidate is expected to conduct research, supervise the research of graduate students, and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses.

    Educational Psychology
    Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology preferably with a focus and background in school guidance or tests and measurements. Relevant K-12 school experience is an asset. A strong commitment to teaching and research is required.

    Elementary Education
    Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Elementary Education with a focus on language arts education. Relevant experience in teaching and supervising student teaching programs in Elementary Education is an asset. A strong commitment to teaching and research is required.

    Curriculum and Instruction/Mathematics Education
    Applicants should have a doctoral degree in mathematics education or curriculum and instruction with a focus in mathematics education at the elementary and/or middle school levels. Teaching experience at the school and/or college and experience in supervising of student teaching programs are assets. A strong commitment to teaching and research is required.

    Curriculum and Instruction/Science Education
    Applicants should have a doctoral degree in science education or curriculum and instruction with a focus in science education at the elementary and/or middle school levels. Teaching experience at the school and/or college and experience in supervising of student teaching programs are assets. A strong commitment to teaching and research is required.

    Computer Education
    Applicants should have a doctoral degree in educational technology with a focus on ICT. Teaching experience at the school and/or college is an asset. Area of concentration in a school subject is an additional asset.

    Applicants are expected to: (1) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their fields (2) supervise MA student research and thesis writing (3) engage in individual and institutional research projects in their fields (4) participate in outreach educational activities.

    The Department of English at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions in the fields of:

    Midieval Literature
    Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate teaching and a promising research program, which are appropriate to the rank at which the application is made. The normal teaching load is not more than nine hours a week often including general education, non-major, major, and MA courses.

    19th Century British Literature
    Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate teaching and a promising research program, which are appropriate to the rank at which the application is made. The normal teaching load is not more than nine hours a week often including general education, non-major, major, and MA courses.

    Renaissance and Early Modern British Literature
    Applicants must have a PhD at the time of appointment. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate teaching and a promising research program, which are appropriate to the rank at which the application is made. The normal teaching load is not more than nine hours a week often including general education, non-major, major, and MA courses.

    Creative Writing with emphasis on Fiction
    Applicants must have a PhD by the time of appointment. University teaching experience is required. Evidence of success in the publication of fiction should be commensurate with the rank at which the application is made. The usual teaching load is not more than nine hours a week. Teaching assignments include both lower division and upper division undergraduate workshops in Creative Writing (multiple genres).

    First or Second Language Acquisition
    Applicants must have a PhD in Linguistics or a related discipline at the time of appointment. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate teaching and a promising research program, which are appropriate to the rank at which the application is made. The normal teaching load is not more than nine hours a week. The appointee will be expected to teach core courses in the English Language program, as well as a graduate seminar on quantitative and/or qualitative research.

    Language Testing
    Applicants must have a PhD in Applied Linguistics or a related discipline at the time of appointment, and must demonstrate familiarity with tools of psychometric analysis. They must also have a proven record of successful undergraduate teaching and a promising research program, which are appropriate to the rank at which the application is made.

    Department of Geology

    The Department of Geology at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions in the fields of:

    Carbonate Sedimentology
    Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in sedimentology and stratigraphy, along with other general geology courses. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in carbonate sedimentology, and to supervise graduate students. About 90% of the Lebanese crustal segment is made up of carbonate rocks. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in this field, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals. Preference will be given to candidates with some teaching experience.

    Petroleum Geology
    Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in petroleum geology, along with introductory geology courses. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research program in the field of petroleum geology / reservoir characterization, and to supervise graduate students in this area. Preference will be given to candidates with some teaching experience. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in petroleum geology, and should have strong research records as demonstrated by publications in scholarly journals.

    Department of History and Archaeology

    The Department of History and Archaeology at the American University of Beirut invites applications for a faculty position in the field of Modern Middle Eastern History.

    The Department particularly welcomes applications from experts on late-Ottoman and/or post-Ottoman Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, modern Iran, as well as in cultural or economic history. Successful candidates are expected to engage in research, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and be qualified to supervise student research and thesis writing. Applicants are also expected to teach one course per semester in the Civilization Sequence Program.

    The Department of Mathematics at the American University of Beirut invites applications for academic positions in various areas of interest in Mathematics.

    Only applicants holding a Ph.D. in the Mathematics field and showing a strong commitment to teaching and research will be considered. Anticipated vacancies are in the areas of:

    There are 13 full time professorial rank faculty in Mathematics and about 120 students in the major. The Department offers programs leading to the Bachelor and Master degrees. The Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences at AUB, within working distance from the Department, also houses research activity in Mathematics.

    The Department offers a large service program in Mathematics for the entire University, as for example in Agriculture, Business, Economics, Engineering, the Natural Sciences, and the newly introduced graduate program in Computational Science.
